I always thought that it was a myth and that my mother was silly for insisting that we poke baked potatoes. I forgot to poke them tonight and didn’t think anything of it.
Well, I shall go on record to say that it is not a myth at all. They explode. It’s a gentle little ‘pop’ and then when you look at the oven window, all you can see is mashed potato.
I guess I’m cleaning my oven tomorrow.

Baking potatoes will explode… and I don’t mean “Pop”, I mean EXPLODE in a regular oven.
In nearly fifty years of baking potatoes I never had this happen in a regular oven.
I was baking four medium to small potatoes, at three hundred fifty degrees for one hour and fifteen minutes. At about one hour, and I was standing in front of the oven… door closed, thank goodness, I heard and felt the explosion. One of the potatoes, closer to the door, had exploded.
It was blown in half with half the skin blown to the back of my large oven and half blown to the front with riced, exploded potato all over the oven and racks.
It really exploded.
I know to puncture potatoes for microwave baking but never have for oven baked potatoes. I will from now on.
It would have been a painful burn if I’d opened the door at just that moment.

Oh, good, it’s not just me! I’m glad you didn’t burn yourself, Hope. Like me, though, you had a nasty mess to clean up.
